Notes:
Argentinean rally driver Claudio Giovanini, 37-year-old from Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Antártica e Islas del Atlántico Sur Province, Argentina, was in the entry list of the 35th edition of the Gran Premio de la Hermandad Argentino-Chilena, scheduled to be contested on the 16/17 August 2008 weekend. One week before the start of the proceedings, he suffered a road accident while making a private reconnaissance test in sight of the rally. He died at 20h40 on Thursday, 21 August 2008, at Punta Arenas hospital, twelve days after the crash.

The accident happened on Saturday, 09 August 2008. Claudio Giovanini and his co-driver Luciano Sebastián Casimiliano, 26, left their rally car and took a hired Chevrolet Corsa to make a reconnaissance test - locally known as "Hoja de Ruta" ("Roadmap") - for the recognition of rally route. According to the Argentine championships rules, the hoja de ruta must be carried out on board of standard cars, without any advertising decals nor rally numbers. Less than 45 kilometers from Puerto Porvenir, Chile, Giovanini lost control of the Chevrolet Corsa which left the road at high speed, overturned and caught fire.

Both the occupants of the car suffered severe burns and injuries in the crash. They were taken to Marcos Chamorro hospital in El Porvenir and later, given the seriousness of their injuries, they were transferred to the Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos de Clínica Magallanes in Punta Arenas, the capital city of the Magallanes and Antartica Chilena region, Chile. Luciano Casimiliano's injuries were non-life threating and he left the hospital a few days later. Claudio Giovanini suffered second-degree burns over eighteen per cent of his body and internal injuries which led to his death, victim of respiratory problems and multiple organ disfunction.

Claudio Giovanini was survived by his wife, Sonia and their children. This was reported to be the third competitor's death related to the Gran Premio de la Hermandad Argentino-Chilena, 24 years after the fatal accident of Paco Puget and his co-driver Elvy Garay who lost their lives near the small town of Vicuсa, Chile, during the 1984 edition of the rally.

Regarded as the most important sports competition in the Tierra del Fuego region, the rally Gran Premio de la Hermandad Argentino-Chilena, also known as Carrera de la Hermandad, is organized by the Club de Volantes de Puerto Porvenir, Chile, and the Automóvil Club Río Grande, Argentina. The event is held every August, uninterruptedly since 1974 - even during the border dispute known as the Beagle Conflict, that endangered Chile and Argentina in 1978 - in the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. Located near the southern tip of South America from which it is separated by the Magellan Strait, the island is divided between Chile's southernmost region, Magallanes and Antartica Chilena, and the Provincia de Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.

The course of the rally is divided in two stages, crossing the border between both countries, with the final standings determined by aggregate times:
first stage, 420 kilometers (261 miles) between Puerto Porvenir and Río Grande;
second stage, 435 kilometers (270 miles) between Río Grande and Puerto Porvenir.
