Notes: A former Unlimited champion, Rick Brickert, 38-year-old from Sandy, Utah, lost his life in an accident during the Unlimited class trials for the 1993 edition of the National Championship Air Races held at the Reno Stead Airport in Washoe County, Nevada.
Brickert crashed at 16h42 on Tuesday, 14 September 1993, shortly after take-off, while attempting an off-airport emergency landing in the desert at Lemmon Valley, Nevada. He was flying his twin-engine Scaled Composites 158-8, registered as N221BP and nicknamed "Pond Racer", between pylons number five and six of the nine-mile course. He radioed to his pit crew that he had problems with his right engine, which was trailing smoke. The plane maneuvered near the east end of the airport for a landing, then it dropped out of view of the airport, crashing near a dry lake. Rick Brickert died in the burned wreckage.
Rick Brickert's burial was at the Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, California.
