Notes: Jason Annis was a native of Augusta, Georgia, and graduated from the North Augusta (South Carolina) High School. He worked as an estimator and took on boat racing, becoming a member of the American Powerboat Association, the National Outboard Racing Association (NORA) and the Southern Professional Outboard Racing Tour.
Jason Annis was involved in a powerboat race accident during the Harborwalk Festival held on the the Sampit River at East Bay Park, in Georgetown, South Carolina, on Sunday, 28 June 1998.
Annis spun out into the path of a Formula V boat driven by his friend, Jerry Harden. Jeff Griggs, the NORA president, witnessed the accident and declared it to be unavoidable given the sudden spin-out. The festival was abandoned after the accident.
This was the first fatal NORA accident since 1983 when Bud Wade was killed at Fort Lauderdale.
Jason Annis was survived by his father and stepmother, David Allen Annis and Bonnie Annis, of Trenton, South Carolina; his mother, Candy Annis, of Belvedere, South Carolina; a brother, Allen Annis, of Cambridge, Massachusetts; two stepsisters, Michelle Sweeney, Augusta, and Melissa Campbell, of Trenton; and his grandparents, Carlton Edwards and Thelma Edwards, Aiken, South Carolina, B.J. Annis of Augusta, and Lois Axson, of North Augusta.
Jason was a resident of North Augusta, South Carolina, at the time of the accident. His funeral took place at the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Augusta, Georgia, on 30 June. He was interred at the Westover Memorial Park in Augusta, Georgia.
