Co-driver to Michel Gal, Anne Gal lost her life in an accident which happened less than 200 meters after the start of the first special stage of the 56th edition of the Rallye du Mont Blanc, held near Morzine, department of Haute-Savoie, Rhône-Alpes, France.
On the approach to a bumpy fast righthander, Michel Gal lost control of his Renault Clio Williams #124 which skidded right round crashing backwards into a small concrete staircase on the right. Anne Gal was killed almost instantly.
Winners of the rally were Stéphane Sarrazin-Patrick Pivato in a Subaru Impreza WRC, from Eric Mauffrey-Karine Triboulot in a Peugeot 206 WRC, second and Nicolas Bernardi-Jean-Marc Fortin, third in a Renault Clio.
It was a black period in French motorsport. First occurred the accident of the female co-driver Anne Gal, on 03 September 2004; nine days later Bruno Rocchia lost his life during the Carros hillclimb and that same day Jacky Deborde was killed during the Rallye des Côtes d'Armor. And a second female rally co-driver, Catherine Delmotte, lost her life during the Rallye du Touquet VHC on 09 October 2004.
