Notes: The name in the "Hungarian order" is Kesjįr Csaba, the family name is Kesjįr, given name Csaba.
He was killed at Norisring, on Friday, 24 June 1988, during 1st practice session for the "200 Meilen von Nürnberg", 7th round of the German Formula 3 Championship. He crashed head-on into the guard-rail at the end of a long straight, at about 200 km/h, being flown into the air and landing upside down on the other side of the track barriers, suffering terrible head injuries. The driver didn't do anything to avoid the crash, possibly the accident happened as a consequence of a brake failure; according to different sources Csaba Kesjįr suffered a sudden illness while driving and lost control. In the days before the race he had a seizure and witness reports stated he didn't want to drive, not feeling well, but he was pushed into starting the practice session at Norisring. After his death the 2nd practice session for the Norisring race was cancelled.
At the time Csaba Kesjįr was the Hungarian most promising driver, the first hope for Formula 1 from Eastern Europe. He started his carrier in 1975 driving karts, and became multiple Junior and National champion. After karting, he moved on to Formula Easter, becoming 8th overall in the 1983 Cup of Peace and Friendship and four times Hungarian Champion from 1982 to 1985, obtaining one win at Albena, Bulgaria, on 18 September 1983 at the wheel of a MTX 1-06. Kesjįr's only Formula Easter victory came after the disqualification of Alexander Medvetschenko from USSR and Jiri Cerva from Czechoslovakia that, as it turned out, had used 1400cc engines instead of the stipulated 1300cc.
In 1986 Kesjįr campaigned a Walter Lechner's Reynard in the Austrian Formula Ford Championship and won the series, passing the following year to German Formula 3 Championship, driving a Dallara 387-Volkswagen for Horst Schübel Rennsport with Bernd Schneider - who became champion at the end of the season - as team mate. Kesjįr's best result was 4th place, he was in 14th place (12 points) in the final standings and won a non-championship race on 07 November 1987, the "Rheinal Rundstreckenrennen" at Hockenheim.
Kesjįr had his debut at the wheel of a Formula 1 driving the Zakspeed Turbo for three laps, a couple of hours after the end of the 1987 Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring.
In 1988 Kesjįr drove again for Schübel Rennsport, a Dallara 388-Volkswagen in the German Formula 3 Championship, scoring 33 points (19th place), best result 8th overall at Mainz-Finthen, just 20 days before his fatal accident at the Norisring.
Csaba's father Jįnos Kesjįr had been also a racing driver, being many times Hungarian champion in various categories in the 60s. Csaba's older brother also called Jįnos raced, and his son Jįnos Jr. - Csaba's nephew - raced turing-car in the 90s, but never drove formula cars. He had a huge accident in a Hungarian touring-car event at the Hungaroring, that forced him to change his racing career from circuit racing to rallies.
