Notes: The second round of the 1968 United States Road Racing Championship, scheduled to be contested at Riverside International Raceway, California, was overshadowed by a fatal accident that happened during the running of the "D and E Production Class Race", on Saturday, 27 April of that year.
Vic Tandy, 48-year-old, from Anaheim, California, was among 37 drivers who started the 14-lap race for smaller cars on the 2.595-mile (4.176-kilometer) road course. The race was one of four amateur qualifying events for the main race of the following day. Tandy's Triumph TR4 hit an oil slick on the Turn 4 esses and went out of control. The car began to fishtail as Tandy battled to control it, but the driver's side door flipped open and he fell partway out of the car. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Riverside Community Hospital.
That same day, Jim Hall at the wheel of his winged Chaparral 2G-Chevrolet set a lap record of 1min19sec, averaging 118.481 mi/h (190.64 km/h) and won the pole position for the 60-lap race. But on Sunday, he failed to start due to transaxle problem. Winner of the USRRC Riverside event was Mark Donohue in Penske's McLaren M6A-Chevrolet.
An experienced racer, Vic Tandy had been driving seven years since resuming his career that first started in the early 1950s. In 1965 he won the Pacific Coast Championship in F Production and in 1966 he finished third in the same class in the American Road Race of Champions.
A manager for the Western Gasket Co. of Los Angeles, Victor Lees Tandy was survived by his wife, Amanda (née Nowakowski) and two daughters, Katherine, 17 and Linda, 15. Burial is in Good Shepherd Cemetery, Huntington Beach, Orange County, California.
