Notes:
The experienced German driver Rudolph Sauerwein, 55-year-old, died in Bad Homburg hospital, Hessen, Germany, on Monday, 04 June 1956, of injuries received when his car crashed in the previous weekend's ADAC Taunus-Rallye. The exact date of accident is still uncertain, the event was held on Saturday, 02 and Sunday, 03 June 1956.
Rudolph Sauerwein made his debut in pre-war era, taking part to the ADAC Eifelrennen held on the Nürburgring Südschleife in 1930, driving a 3-liter two-seat Bugatti T44 - retired after the third lap. As an Adler Trumpf works driver, in 1934 he won outright the French rally Coupe des Glaciers, co-driven by M. Becker and in 1936 he took a class victory, third place overall with Wilhelm Kramer as co-driver, in the Coupe Internationale des Alpes. Sauerwein was twice winner of his class in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in 1937 and 1938, finishing in sixth place overall in both occasions, sharing with Peter Graff Orssich of Austria, a works 1.7-litre Adler Super Trumpf Rennlimousine.

When racing returned after the end of World War II, Rudolph Sauerwein joined team Porsche and in 1951 he returned au Mans. This was the first year in which Porsche factory cars were entered in the 24-hour race, after private owners such as Walter Glöckler, Otto Mathé and Heinrich Graf von der Mühle-Eckart had already made the mark known in sportscar racing. At the 1951 Le Mans race, Porsche KG entered two 356/4 Coupé 1.1-litre cars, #46 for the French team Auguste Veuillet-Edmond Mouche, who managed to win the class, 20th place overall, and #47 for Rudolph Sauerwein, paired with another Frenchman, Robert Brunet. Unfortunately, the car was badly damaged in practice accident and they did not start the race.

Co-driven by Max Nathan, in 1953 Rudolph Sauerwein finished second in the prestigious Alpine Rally, a gruelling five-day event in French Alps, behind team mates Helmut Polensky-Walter Schlüter, both driving 1.5-litre Porsche 356s. The next year, Sauerwein shared the car with Paul von Metternich in that same event, now officially named Critérium International des Alpes, finishing 13th in the rally. A tenth place in the Internationale Österreichische Alpenfahrt followed in 1955, at the wheel of a BMW 502.
