Notes:
Tracy Read was a crew member of Cale Yarborough's NASCAR Winston Cup team. A native of Lake Village, Indiana, he lived in Charlotte, North Carolina. At the age of 26 he was beginning to show his potential as a driver, contesting the ARCA late model stock car series, when he was killed during the ARCA Permatex 500, held at the Alabama International Motor Speedway in Talladega, on Saturday, 25 July 1987.

On 78th of the 117-lap race, Tracy Read hit at high speed the Oldsmobile driven by Kurt Bryant that was spinning in front of him after hitting the outside wall coming off Turn 2. Read then crashed head-on into an earthen embankment in the infield, suffering massive chest and upper abdominal injuries from which he was pronounced dead at the track medical center.

This was reported to be the seventh racing related death at the track since it was opened in 1969. Tracy Read had started the race 9th and was classified 28th, at the wheel of the #15 Chevrolet sponsored by Randy Hope Insurance, owned by his father Gilbert Read, who was watching the race from the pits. After the tragedy the race was not stopped and Grant Adcox eventually was the winner. Yarborough who finished 5th, remembered his friend by driving the next Sunday's NASCAR Talladega 500 with Read's #15 emblazoned on the back of his #29 car, and both the driver and his crew wore black armbands in Read's memory.

Accident happened in the second race held at Talladega that year. During the first Tracy Read was involved in a large multi-car accident, from which he escaped uninjured.
