Notes:
Fumiyasu Sato died at the age of 33 in an accident while practicing for the Fuji Gran 250 Kilometres. It happened on Sunday, 01 May 1983.

A well known Japanese sportscar driver, Fumiyasu Sato started his career in the early 1970s. In 1973 he achieved a fine class win, third place overall in the Fuji Tourist Trophy, a 500-mile touring-car race, sharing a 1.6-litre Toyota Celica GT with Naohiro Fujita, one lap behind the winning works Ford Capri RS 2600 of Jochen Mass-Dieter Glemser. A prominent figure on the Fuji Grand Champion Series, Sato finished fourth in points in 1976, sixth in 1977, seventh in 1979 and ninth in 1980, driving a March 74S - BMW for the Alpha Cubic Racing Team. He then moved to a MCS 2 - Mazda, finishing two times fifth in the series, in 1981 and 1982.

Amongst his career's prestigious victories were three editions of the Fuji 1000-km race, in 1976, 1981 and 1982, and four times the Fuji 500-km in 1977, 1980, 1981 and 1982. In 1979 Fumiyasu Sato won the 500 Miles of Suzuka, paired with Masami Kuwashima, at the time one of the Japanese stars, driving his March 74S, now fitted with Mazda rotary engine.

In 1980 he competed in the IMSA GT Series on the other side of Pacific ocean, at the wheel of a Tom's Dome Toyota Celica Turbo. Two years later, paired with his country fellow Naoki Nagasaka in an Auto Beaurex Motor Sports Seelex-sponsored Group 5 BMW M1, Fumiyasu Sato finished fourth overall, first of his class, twelve laps behind the winning Rothmans-Porsche 956 of Jochen Mass-Jacky Ickx, in the 6 Hours of Fuji then a round of the 1982 World Sportscar Championship.

The Fuji Gran 250 Kilometres race was the second round of the 1983 Fuji Grand Champion Series. It was a sportscar championship which started in 1973 with all races held at the Fuji International Speedway. It was originally reserved to 2-litre sportscars, until 1979 when single seat cars, similar to the revived Can-Am series, were allowed to compete in the series. The rules dropped engine size to 3-litre in 1987 and then the series changed its name from Fuji Grand Champion Series to Grand Champion Series because the events were not held only at the Fuji track. In 1990 the series folded due to attendance dropping.

The Motorsport Memorial Team has chosen to adopt Sato as the roman transliteration of the surname of the unfortunate driver. Some sources prefer the form "Satou" or "Satoh".
