Notes:
On the penultimate day of the 1988 Rallye Paris-Alger-Dakar, Thursday, 21 January of that year, a support car with a television crew of Sierra Production on board, following the rally, went off the road and hit a group of spectators, killing one woman from Mauritania, whose name was not released, and seriously injuring his children. Also two of the occupants of the car, two French journalists, sustained injuries.

The accident occurred in a small village near Moudjeria, territory of Mauritania, about 25 kilometers from the Senegal border, during the 17th stage Nouakchott - Richard Toll, of the 1988 Rallye Paris-Alger-Dakar. One of the injured children succumbed to his/her injuries some time later. His/her date and place of death are still uncertain.

According to other sources, including website PaDak-Wordpress, the children killed in the accident in Mauritania were two instead of one; this has not yet been confirmed. First conflicting reports of the accident also stated that two French journalists had been killed, this is not true. Different accounts indicated that one of the victims died when a car ran over him while he was asleep at a rally bivouac; this information is incorrect.

The 10th running of the Dakar Rally event, held in 1988 proved to be one of the worst in history, the toll being seven people killed during the stages. In addition to the woman and her child in Mauritania, the other deceased persons were two other spectators and three competitors. PanAfrican news agency, representing the Dakar Rally organizers publicly stated that the four spectator deaths were “insignificant for the organizers”, attracting immense criticism from the Vatican.

The course of the 1988 Rallye Paris-Alger-Dakar was: Paris Courdimanche - Alger - El Oued - Hassi Messaoud - Bordj Omar Driss - Tamanrasset - Djanet - Djado - Arlit - Agadez - Niamey - Kidal - Tessalit - Lemjebir - Tombouctou - Bamako - Kayes - Moudjeria - Nouakchott - Richard Toll - Dakar, passing from France through Algeria, Niger, Mali, Mauritanie and Senegal. Finnish crew Juha Kankkunen-Juha Piironen in a Peugeot won the cars competition; the Italian Edi Orioli won his first motorcycle race on a Honda NXR; a Tatra team from Czechoslovakia Karel Loprais-Radomir Stachura-Ing Muck won the truck class.
