Ray Gastelu was a six-time Pro Stock champion at Wall Stadium - a 1/3-mile paved oval located in Belmar, New Jersey, that would be renamed Wall Township Speedway in 2002. Gastelu achieved 49 feature wins over 14 winning seasons at track - more than any other driver in his division.

On 30 June 2001 Gastelu took his regular regular #69 Pro Stock onto the track for practice laps in a warm-up session prior to a race, but pulled into the pits with mechanical trouble. He then borrowed a fellow competitor's car and returned to the track, but was then struck by a heart attack. Gastelu was able to bring the car to a safe stop on the pit ramp entrance; medics responded immediately and transported Gastelu to Jersey Shore Medical Center, but he was dead on arrival.

Ray Gastelu is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, in Farmingdale, New Jersey.
