Notes:
A spectator was struck and killed by a competing car during the third stage of the 1986 Safari Rally, Nairobi-Eldoret-Kakamega-Nairobi.

The steering rod of Kenneth Eriksson's works Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V #17 broke while approaching a fast right bend. He managed to turn round the car jamming on the brake, but it went off the road at high speed, ending into a group of spectators who were standing on the outside of the bend. One of them was unable to escape and was violently hit by the car.

Kenneth Eriksson and his co-driver Peter Diekmann vainly tried to help the unfortunate spectator, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was a Kenyan man whose name was not released.

The accident happened on Tuesday, 01 April 1986, shortly before the control post 53, nearly the town of Kakamega, western region of Kenya.

In another accident which happened the previous day, during the second stage of the rally Nairobi-Nanjuki-Eldoret-Nairobi, the Lancia Rally 037 driven by Markku Alén-Ilkka Kivimäki struck a young girl who was trying to cross the road. The Lancia team's helicopter, following the rally, landed thereabout and took to hospital the injured girl who eventually recovered. The Finnish team did not abandon the stage, finishing the rally in third place.
