Notes:
During the first special stage of the 1986 Rallye de Portugal, Lagoa Azul, the Ford RS200 #15 driven by Joaquim Santos-Miguel Oliveira went out of control along the Sintra Forest road, formerly used for hillclimb competitions. The car left the road on the right side at the Curva das Águas and fell down a slope, running over a dense crowd of spectators that lined the road, killing three and injuring thirty-three of them. The tragedy led to the demise of Group B rally cars, at the end of 1986.

This was reported to be the first spectator fatalities ever in the event's 19-year history. María Rosa Ribeiro, 36-year-old, and her eleven-year-old son, whose given name was not released, were killed at the scene. Different accounts reported the age of the boy to be 9 or 13. Private spectators' cars and a total of twelve ambulances that arrived to the place of accident, took the injured people to Cascais hospital.

Among the spectators who were rushed to hospital were two young men, Nuno Sardinha and Hélio Tomar and a young boy, Tomar's friend of whom is known only the given name Pauli - family name unknown. Pauli ? succumbed to his injuries several hours later at hospital.

Earlier in that same stage Timo Salonen, current World Rally Champion, at the wheel of a Peugeot 205 Turbo, hit a British photographer, who suffered a broken leg. The duo Timo Salonen-Seppo Harjanne did not abandone the rally.

At the end of the third special stage the news of the tragedy arrived to the competitors; the official squads and professional rallymen that were in the park of attendance at the Estoril circuit, decided to pull out of the competition. However, under much controversy the rally organizer César Torres decided that the event had to go on, despite the absence of factory drivers and teams. Joaquim Moutinho-Edgar Fortes aboard a Renault 5 Turbo eventually were the winners of the rally, from Jorge Bica-Cândido Júnior in a Lancia Rally 037, second and Gianni Del Zoppo-Loris Roggia in a works Fiat Uno Turbo, third. The Rallye de Portugal - Vinho do Porto was the third round of the 1986 World Rally Championship.

In the following editions, the Sintra stage, known for its spectacular character as much as for the chaotic behaviour of the spectators, was never included in the Rallye de Portugal map.
