Notes:
In 1928 the CSI (International Sporting Committee) of the A.I.A.C.R. (Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus) introduced a new Formula Libre with no engine capacity limit. Not helped by the increasing economic downturn, four European countries, including Germany, canceled their Grands Prix and instead put on sportscar events. The original Großer Preis von Deutschland was annulled and run instead for sportscars on Sunday, 15 July 1928. It was a 18-lap race over the 28.265-kilometer Nürburgring, using both Nordschleife and Sudschleife.

The 1928 Großer Preis von Deutschland für Sportwagen was marred by a number of accidents that resulted in the deaths of two men. During the fourth lap of the race, German amateur racer Ernst von Halle had a serious accident on the Kesselchen section of the Nordschleife, when his Amilcar went off the track and rolled over. The driver suffered a contused lung, from which he succumbed the following Monday, 16 July 1928 in the Adenau Hospital, aged 23.

Ernst von Halle had purchased his 1.1-litre Amilcar C6 in 1927, making his debut in the Rund um die Solitude für Sportwagen at the Solitude. In 1928 he competed in the ADAC Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring on 28 May, finishing a remarkable first in class, third place overall. His second start at the track two months later, was his fatal race.

He was the son of the economist, writer and university teacher Ernst Levy von Halle of Hamburg, who was associate professor of economics at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin, and his wife Henriette von Moßner, daughter of General Walther von Moßner. In addition to his parents, he was survived by his brother and his sister. Both Ernst von Halle, father and son, are buried at the Friedhof Grunewald in Berlin, Germany.

The second fatality of the Großer Preis von Deutschland für Sportwagen occurred during the fifth lap, when Čeněk Junek lost control of his Bugatti T35B at Breidscheid, went off the road and crashed, being killed almost instantly of head injuries.

The race was not stopped and team Mercedes-Benz made first, second and third place. The three Mercedes-Benz SS type cars were driven by the winners Rudi Caracciola-Christian Werner, Otto Merz-Eugen Salzer, second and Willy Walb-Christian Werner, third. Race regulations of the time allowed for driver changes and, during the race held in boiling heat, Werner who had already given his place at the wheel to Walb many laps earlier, took over from Caracciola during the final laps, thus appearing twice in the final classification of the Grand Prix.
