Stock car driver Buren Skeen, 28-years-old, of Denton, North Carolina, died at 16h45 on Monday, 13 September 1965 at McLeod Infirmary in Florence, South Carolina, a week after being injured in an accident in Labor Day's NASCAR Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

Buren Skeen was 21st in the starting grid of 45 in the race, on Monday, 06 September 1965. On the second lap he lost control of his 1964 Ford which spun into the third turn wall then careened back into the path of the oncoming field. Three other competitors were involved in the accident and his car was hit broadside on the driver's side by another Ford driven by Reb Wickersham, at a speed of more than 120 mi/h (193 km/h).

Firefighters and emergency crews had to use acetylene torches to extricate him from the wreck before he was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery. Buren Skeen, who sustained head and abdominal injuries, never regained consciousness and died seven days after the accident. None of the other drivers in the wreck were seriously injured.

This was his eighth start in the NASCAR Grand National series. A ten-year stock car racing veteran, Skeen earned three finishes in the top ten, with a fifth at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in May 1965. By the end of that season he was classified sixteenth in points.

Buren Skeen who worked for Vernon Gates Construction of Denton, North Carolina, was survived by his wife Brenda and their two sons, Derrick, four-year-old, and Eric Chris, two. He was buried in Lineberry United Methodist Church Cemetery, Denton, Davidson County, North Carolina.
