Notes:
The 16th edition of the Mille Miglia took place on Sunday, 24 April 1949. James Cohen, 33, and Reg Hignett, 35, two motor trade friends from Manchester were flagged away down the Brescia starting line at 06h25 in what would be their first and last motor race. They shared a dark green Healey Duncan Drone 2400, reg. plate number HVF-172, which sported the race number #625 on its flanks, running in the touring-car class. Some 35 kilometers after the start of the race, the car of the British team crashed against the parapet of a stone bridge over the Mella River on the outskirts of Manerbio, province of Brescia, Italy.

While approaching the bridge, Cohen who was at the wheel of the car did not see the parapets obscured by the spectators who were vying for a better view. As the Healey closed on the bridge, they suddenly moved back. Possibly the movement of people caused the driver to lose control of the car. It crashed into the stone parapet, spun round and into the opposite wall, crushing Reg Hignett, who was in the passenger seat, instantly killing him.

James Cohen was thrown some 15 meters backwards from the car, being very badly injured. Despite his injuries left him paralyzed from the waist down, two days after the accident the Italian newspapers reported that he was improving, although still in serious condition. On Wednesday, 27 April 1949 he was transferred by airplane back to Manchester, England, accompanied by his wife. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on 11 December 1949.

This was the first start of a Healey Duncan in the race. The 1,593-kilometer (836-mile) course of the 1949 edition of the Mille Miglia passed through Brescia - Cremona - Piacenza - Parma - La Cisa - Massa - Pisa - Livorno - Grosseto - Civitavecchia - Roma - Terni - Rieti - L'Aquila - Pescara - Ancona -Pesaro - Rimini - Ravenna - Ferrara - Rovigo - Padova - Vicenza - Verona - Brescia. Clemente Biondetti-Ettore Salani in a Ferrari 166 MM Barchetta Touring were the winners of the race.
