Notes:
South African champion Brett MacLeod was killed in a fall during the first heat of the World Supersport Championship, held at Kyalami on Sunday, 28 March 1999. The fatal accident overshadowed the opening meeting of the season.

MacLeod, who was leading the race, crashed just before the end of the first lap when his bike stalled and then suddenly restarted as he came out of the final chicane. MacLeod's bike got on the grass and he flew over the handlebars and fell down, just into the path of Massimo Meregalli of Italy, who couldn't avoid impact as he lay on the track.

Gravely injured, Brett MacLeod was rushed to a local hospital, where he passed away shortly after admission. Meregalli sustained a broken right arm and wrist in the accident.

Brett MacLeod, who was 23-year old, was competing with a Suzuki. Owing to his death, the final race of the day, the Nashua Invitation, a domestic Supersport race, was canceled as a mark of respect.
