Notes:
A newcomer on the Isle of Man's Mountain Circuit, Swedish rider Joakim Karlsson was obliged to wear an orange jacket over his leathers, during the first practice session, on Saturday, 28 May 2005. Two days later, he participated in the second practice session, riding his #77 Suzuki GSX-R 1000 entered in the Superbike race, scheduled to be held the following Saturday.

Joakim Karlsson was fatally injured in Monday night, 30 May 2005, when his bike appeared to negotiate too fast the right-hand Douglas Road Corner in Kirk Michael, on his first lap of the session. He began to brake hard but the machine slid along the roadway and he fell down, colliding with the gate pillars of a house. Death was almost instantaneous.

Although Joakim Karlsson was an experienced rider in Scandinavia, he was making his first appearance on the Island. He made his debut in the early 1980 but retired from the sport in 1990 and returned to racing in 2004, after a 14-year hiatus, competing in Scandinavian events. A 39-year-old single man, he was survived by his partner, Pernilla and their seven-year-old daughter. He was a mechanic by trade, living in Habo, Jönköping county in southern Sweden.
