Notes:
The Yamaha Supertrophy race held at Monza on Sunday, 24 May 1987, supporting event to the World Motorcycle Championship's Gran Premio delle Nazioni, was Mauro Ceccoli's first start in circuit racing. The 23-year-old rider from Genoa, Italy, made his racing debut just one week earlier, in the Doria-Creto hillclimb near his hometown. That day, he rode a Yamaha for the Gruppo Motorsport Team of Genoa, finishing fourth in the 500 cm3 class.

At the end of his heat at Monza, Ceccoli had qualified for the final. During the opening lap, while approaching at a speed of about 140 km/h (87 mi/h) the Lesmo bends he lost control of his bike and fell to the asphalt. He lost his helmet upon impact, sustaining fatal head injuries.

Mauro Ceccoli was quickly reached by the emergency crews and by riders Saracco e Niccoli who first arrived to the place of accident and stopped their bikes, coming to help. Ceccoli's helmet was found in the other side of the track, still with the strap connected.

The Yamaha Supertrophy was an Italian category for 4-cylinder Yamaha FZ400 motorcycles.
