Notes:
French rider Marcel Pilet, 37, who competed in the 1996 Dakar Rally, struck with his KTM motorcycle a young girl, whose name was not released, passing on the road. It happened on Friday, 12 January 1996, in the small village of Tarembali, territory of Guinea, during the 13th stage Kayes-Labé. The girl was killed upon impact.

This was the third fatality which happened during the 1996 Dakar Rally. Spanish spectator Tomás Urpí died when his car overturned near Rabat in Morocco and competitor Laurent Gueguen was killed when his truck hit a landmine, exploded and overturned in Morocco.

The course of the 1996 Rallye Granada-Dakar was: Grenade - Malaga - Nador - Oujda - Er Rachidia - El Hassan - Smara - Zouerat - Atar - Zouerat - El Mreïti - Tichit - Kiffa - Kayes - Labé - Tambacounda - Dakar, passing from Spain through Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Guinea and Senegal. French team Pierre Henri Lartigue-Michel Perin in a Citroën won the car competition for the second time in a row; Italian Edi Orioli won his fourth motorcycle race on a Yamaha; a Kamaz driven by Russian Viktor Moskovskikh with co-drivers Kouzmine and Bagavetdinov won the truck class.
