Notes: Northern Irish rider Steve Smyth - whose surname is often misspelled Smith - was one of the entrants in the 1986 Ulster Grand Prix, held on the 7.402-mile (11.910-kilometer) Dundrod circuit, on Saturday, 16 August of that year.
He competed in that event with a 347 cm3 Yamaha, in the Finlay 350 Class race. The class received this name as it was sponsored by Jim Finlay. On the third lap of the race, Smyth was occupying the eighth place, closely following Davy Johnson, who crashed out at the Windmill section of the track. It left Steve Smyth no option but to avoid his fellow competitor. The only way past the prostrate rider was into a grass bank, after colliding with the wreckage. Smyth lost his life almost instantaneously.
Steve Smyth had a twin brother, and the two lived in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, close to the Dundrod circuit. Steve Smyth was the fourth of six Irish motorcycle racers who were killed in less than five months, in 1986.
